Question

Question 1 :

With the advent of crime mapping, police agencies are able to target “Hot Spots”, which are times and places shown to have high crime rates. Agencies can place officers in these “hot spots” as both a deterrent and as a way to apprehend criminals in the act of committing crimes.

Discuss if you think this is an effective tactic to actually reduce crime. Does targeting “hot spots” reduce crime or just move it from one place to another? Is targeting “hot spots” a clever way to disguise profiling? Explain and support your answer.

Question 2:

This week, we covered Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and crime mapping. As you reflect on these topics, how do you think GIS or crime mapping can benefit law enforcement or corrections? Also, how do you think that this technology relates to either your personal or professional life?

Your response should be at least 150 words. Please write in complete sentences and in your own words. As always, double-check your spelling and grammar.

This is a criminal justice subject.

Explanation / Answer

HOT SPOTS

Ok, so these hot spots are the places where there are frequent troublesome activities are taking place, these places can be schools, offices, shops and etc. Police know these places either because they keep patrolling at that place or like how everyone knows about them because crime is often taking place there. these areas can be called high crime areas or hot spots and crimes in these areas are highly predicted.

POLICING HOTSPOTS

Policing hotspots can be an effective step towards reducing these hot spots into normal areas, policing them varies because these spots do not have a particular size they vary from place to place, usually they are small units either a building or a locality where such activities are taking place These hotspots can be targeted by various methods we have now ;-

Various new technology has helped the police to locate these hotspots closely and to observe how they are concentrated within the area which has helped them further in reducing crime in these areas. According to me frequent patrolling can reduce crime in these areas at a large amount because physical presence is the one which would deter these criminals in doing crime often, Also frequent gun searches and seizers, drug trafficking crackdown and zero tolerance policing would help a lot to combat crime here.

Hence, targetting these hot spots would not move them from one place to another always if the policing and the practices adopted by the police are effective enough it would deter the criminals to further hold such practices or them would just end up being in the lockups due frequent crackdowns and seizers by the police which would, in turn, reduce the crime.

GIS

So, Analysts use these maps they combine street maps to view the density and the areas which have the crime rates the most This system places each crime within a grid system on the map and then it colors each cell based on the number of criminal activities took place there hence this system helps a lot to police and law agencies to point out the hot spots and then making strategies according to them.
