Question

This “Cheatsheet” has been making the rounds of educators, or so I gather from social media. I think that it is useful, but I have two remarks.

I followed through on the Global Digital Citizen Foundation, which published the guide, and learned that they are an organization with decidedly liberal principles. As critical thinkers who know how to evaluate whether a source is biased, consider whether this cheatsheet is liberal or politically neutral. If it is biased, consider the extent to which it is a problem

Explanation / Answer

The cheatsheet explained on the Global Citizen Foundation is politically neutral. The cheatsheet does not advertise for or against any political entity, but rather urges to question any political event without being political. This includes questioning the statement, intentions of the authority, one's own beliefs around that event and general assumption of the event, in total. It is crucial for a critical thinker to evaluate an information that is given to him/her. This cheatsheet urges an individual to evaluate the information and rely on one's own analysis of the event, which is based on grounding research. This could be in favour of/against any political party. This also involves becoming aware of our own biasness, attitude and stereotypes that we carry within ourselves, while evaluating an event.Last but not the least, one cannot critically analyse an event without knowing the motive behind it. For example, when the income tax rate is increased, what could be the motive behind this politically generated policy? Is it to invest the tax payers money in education and national healthcare? Or is it to socialise the national debt that the country owes to IMF or other international banks? A critical thinker studies the motive and infers conclusion about an event. In short, this cheatsheet is not biased and is politically neutral. It is not promoting or deevaluating any political ideology or government, rather providing key points to acquire the skill of critical thinking.
