Question
2. I want you to watch two hours of television. For one hour you are to watch a children's television show to see what is being advertised (the commercials). For the second hour, you are to watch a sporting event to see what is being advertised (the commercials). As you are watching these two hours, you are to study advertising as the agent of socialization. You are to identify at least 4 cultural lessons (the viewer of this program should or should not – in other words – the norms) that are constructed in these advertisements. Tell me what you observed, what did you learn and what does this convey about socialization? Explain.
(The answers need to be in soft copy only)
Explanation / Answer
When I watched the children television most of the advertisements shown were majorly about chocolate and toys. Whereas, for sports, the advertisements were about sports drinks and technology.
The cultural lesson for the children television showed, what are the daily practices that a kid is supposed to do. For example, a toothpaste add, which says that a kid needs to brush his teeth twice a day would help him to stay away from tooth decay.
Likewise in the sporting event, the commercials mainly highlighted energy drinks. It shows that a sportsman should have a healthy lifestyle to play sports and having those healthy drinks will boost their energy and stamina. And they also show commercials related to ailment and medicine for pain and how to cure.
