For each of the designs below indicate what kind of design was used: Between-subjects, Within-subjects, or Mixed.

A researcher is interested in the effects of mood (happy vs. sad) and task difficulty (easy vs. hard) on memory. Half of the participants were provided with a list of happy words (the other half a list of sad words) and were instructed to think about how each word relates to themselves. After the mood manipulation all participants were given two lists of words: one to study for 10 min (easy task) the other to study for 1 min (hard task). The researcher found those in the happy condition recalled more words compared to the sad condition, but the effect was smaller for the easy task.

Example 2:A researcher is interested in the effects of instructions (biased vs. unbiased) and lineup type (target present vs. target absent) on decision time. Half of the participants were provided with biased instructions (the other half with unbiased) and were then shown a lineup to make an identification decision. Next participants saw either a target present lineup or a target absent lineup. The amount of time the witness took to make each lineup decision was measured using a stop watch. The researcher found that biased instructions increased choosing rates for both lineup types, but the effect was greater for target-absent lineups.
