Question

1.Describe oogenesis.

2.Arrange the following in proper order as they are produced in the ovary.

corpus albicans

secondary follicle

Graffian follicle

corpus luteum

primary follicle

3. Ovulation occurs when the oocyte is released into the peritoneal cavity. Explain the means by which it usually enters the uterine tube.

4. At puberty, the anterior pituitary secretes _________________ (that stimulates follicle development) and __________________ that helps with ovulation of the oocyte from the ovary.

5. Trace the path an oocyte would take as it makes its way from the ovary to the outside of the body.

Explanation / Answer

Answer

1. Oogenesis
- Oogenesis is the process of production and development of female gamates (Ovum) that place in ovaries.

2. Order of follicular stages.

- Primary follicle ----------- 1
- Secondary follicle ---------- 2
- Graffian follicle ------------- 3
- Corpus luteum ------------- 4
- Corpus albicans ------------- 5

3. Entry of secondary oocyte in uterine tubes
After ovulation, secondary occytes is released by mature follicle. Each uterine tubes have funnel shapes ending called infundibulum. On the infundibulum there are finger-like projections called cilia.
As the ovary releases the secondary oocyte, cilia has to catch the egg and let it pass forward. Oocyte does not have features to get propelled on its own. It depends upon the movement of cilia and actions of smooth muscle lining of the uterine tube. Secondary oocyte gets fertilized in uterine tube. If not fertilized it is removed through menstruation.

4. At puberty, the anterior pituitary secretes Follicle stimulating hormone (that stimulates follicle development) and Leutinizing Hormone that helps with ovulation of the oocyte from the ovary.

5. Pathway of Oocyte

A. If fertilization does not occur

Secondary oocyte from ovary------------> Infundibulum -------------> Fallopian tube--------------> Uterus ----------> Along with sheded endometrial lining --------------> Cervix -------------> Vaginal canal -------------> Out of the body as menses.

B. If fertilization occurs.

Secondary oocyte from ovary------------> Infundibulum -------------> Fallopian tube ------------> Fertilization -----------------> Implantation in uterus

- If fertilization occurs, secodary oocyte completes Meiosis -II and is converted in zygote. It is implanted in endometrial lining of uterus. Development and nourishment of growing fetus takes place in Uterus.
