Question

Interactive Physiology 2.0 Cardiovascular System: Factors Affecting Blood Pressure Worksheet 1. The total amount of friction between the blood and the vessel wall, which makes it more difficult for the blood to flow, is called 2. The thickness or stickiness of blood, which affects its ability to flow, is called 3. What factor affecting blood pressure is altered by excessive salt intake? 4. How is blood pressure affected by excessive sweating? 5. What effect would increased concentration of vasoconstrictor substances in the blood have on total peripheral resistance? 6. Which single factor determining blood pressure is altered by heart activity? 7. How would an increase in total peripheral resistance affect blood pressure? 8. Total peripheral resistance is determined by blood viscosity, vessel length, and vessel diameter. Which one of these factors has the greatest effect on total peripheral resistance? 9. How does an increase in the total vessel length cause an increase in blood pressure? 10. An increase in arterial vessel diameter would have what effect on blood pressure?

Explanation / Answer

1.Total Peripheral resistance. It's also referred as systemic vascular resistance. This is the resistance maintained by all the vasculature except pulmonary vasculature. It controls the blood pressure by neutralizing the flow of blood.

2.Blood viscosity. Viscosity of blood is due the presence of blood elements and plasma. If the blood cells are more with thick plasma the viscosity will be increase.

3.Blood volume.when the salt intake is more it causes raised salt in blood stream results in excessive fluid collection within the blood stream. So the blood volume increases thus ultimately increases blood pressure.

4.Blood pressure decreases. If you lost the excessive salt in sweating, so that decreases sodium in bloodstream. So that fluid shifts out of blood stream. Blood volume decreases. It ultimately decreases blood pressure.

5.Total peripheral resistance would increases

6.Cardiac output

7.Blood pressure would increase

8.Vessel diameter

9.By increasing Total peripheral resistance

10.Blood pressure would decreases
