AND PHOTOS structor and your textbook, study the models illustrating the stages of Activity 2: MEIOSIS MODELS (ooge outer- which is oogenesis in this case. During the opening b 5. What Pg. stages of the meiosis diagram (pg. 16) and label the models of oogenesis (pe 17) in this manual. Answer the following questions: 1. In what type of human cells does meiosis occur? Ecto? Mes 2. In egg cells, polar bodies are formed. What is the purpose of polar body formation? What Ene happens to polar bodies? Acti Note that in sperm cell formation one primordial sperm cell divides into four sperm cells (no polar bodies are formed.) 3. What is the function of meiosis in gamete formation? 4. When an egg is fertilized by a sperm cell, what happens to the chromosome number? 5. How many chromosomes do humans have in normal egg or sperm cells? (N number) 6. How many chromosomes do humans have in fertilized egg cells? (2N number)Explanation / Answer
1. Primary oocyte In the the process of oogenesis in females and spermatogonium in the process of spermatogenesis in males undergoes meiosis to form haploid egg and sperm.
One primary oocyte form 1 egg and 3 polar bodies and one spermatogonium forms 4 sperms which are in haploid after underwent meiosis.
2.polar bodies are the small haploid cells that formed during the process of oogenesis. They are the mechanism which allows for shedding the excessive genetic material during the production of ovum. Polar bodies helps to make the ovum haploid. Polar bodies will be reabsorbed and it will disappear later.
3. Meiosis is one type of cell division where the chromosomes are reduced to half of the number and forms 4 daughter cells.
In the gamates the function of meiosis is to reduce the chromosome number to the half I.e haploid ( 23 chromosomes). Egg and sperm are the end products of meiotic division of gamates. After fertilization the chromosomes becomes diploid ( 46 chromosomes).
4.Egg is the haploid cell ( 23 chromosomes) and sperm is the haploid cell ( 23 chromosomes). After fertilization of egg with sperm the chromosomes number becomes diploid ( 46 chromosomes).
5.Normally in human's Egg and sperms are having haploid number chromosomes ( N - 23 chromosomes).
6. Fertilized egg having diploid number ( 2N - 46 chromosomes) chromosomes.
