Test Your Quantitative Ability It and a glucose solution are separated by a membrane that is permeable to water but not to the solutes. centration of 1.95 g per 250 mL of water (molecular weight-58.5). The glucose solution 11. S uppose a sa The NaCl solution has a con has a concentration of 9.0 g per 250 mL of water (molecular weight 180). and milliosmolality of both solutions. State whether osmosis will occur and, if Calculate the molality, millimolality it will, in which direction. Explain your answer

Explanation / Answer

Molality of NaCl solution = 1.95 X 1000/ 250 X 58.5 = 0.133 (Molality = g X 1000/ w X m where g = weight of the solute in grams, W = weight of the solvent in grams, m = molecular weight of the solute).

Thus milimolality = 0.133 X 1000 = 133 mili m.

Molality of glucose solution = 9 X 1000/ 250 X 180 = 0.2 = 200 mili m.

Now, miliosmolality of NaCl solution = 133 X 2 = 266 (osmolality = molality X dissociation constant). NaCl dissociate into two ions and thus value of dissociation constant =2)

miliosmolality of glucose solution = 200 X 1 (glucose does not dissociate and thus the dissociation constant value is 1).

Thus, osmosis will occur and the direction will be from glucose solution (low osmolality) to NaCl (higher osmolality) solution. Thus water will move from glucose to NaCl solution.
