Different parts of the brain performs different functions. When a person is sleeping, only the part which controls involuntary functions in the body needs to work. When a person is studying or thinking, the part of the brain related to that particular function needs to work. Whichever part of he brain has to work more at particular time, that part requires more oxygen from the blood. Neurons require the energy supplied by oxygen in blood. This is because nerve impulses are continuously converted to electrical impulses and get transmitted and this is an energy consuming process.
