Question

Scenario: College student presents to your office for a routine annual check-up. The patient has a pierced lip. The lip stud is positioned 1 cm below the medial portion of her inferior lip. Oral examination indicates an area of gingival recession on the buccal surface of the alveolar bone that anchors the lower central incisors which you attribute to the stud. The skin tissue around the stud is red and appears inflamed. She complains that the area around her stud is painful.

1) How would you diagnosis this scenario in relation to how it effects your connective tissues around the gums and inflammation around the stud?

2) How would you explain this to the patient in detail to where they understand the anatomical processes that caused this diagnosis?

3) How would you treat the patient?

Explanation / Answer

1.because there is recession on buccal side of the alveolar bone surrounding lower incisors. This might progress to periodontitis.in peridontitis tooth surrounding connective tissue begins to break down. Gingiva attaches to tooth at particular part this also receeds down. Resulting in lessning the tooth support.

2.we can show it to patient that previous gingival contouring and location and now gingiva receeds so its going to be hazardous.

3.for treatment we should remove that stud first because inflammation in there surrounding tissue. Also regular check up should be done along with curreting.if require we should do flap surgery and grafting etc.
