Question

Based on the following Life-Cycle S-Curve and Conflict Level, three possible reasons can be explained for the sudden increase in the slope at point A:

1.The Project Manager’s early performance was poor, the Senior Management intervened at point A, resolved the problems and managed to make significant improvements to the progress, then gave the project back to the Project Manager when the crisis was over.

2. The Project Manager was not empowered (supported) properly. He was given the right people, but not the right tools & equipment. He managed to convince the Senior Management to provide necessary resources to improve progress

3. The Client has been failing to finance the project properly and finally injected some money into the project at point (A)

Explanation / Answer

a- PM- Leadership- It is found that project manager is not much capable to handle the project but initially he developed the skills to execute the project,so more leadership power should be assign to project manager so that he can exercise the power in the remainder of the project.

Management- Management should oversight the work of project manager very closely to guide him in any problem.

b- SM- Leadership- It proves that senior manager didn't use proper leadership technique and style so for the remainder of the project the senior manager should be catious of any thing and provide all the equipment and tools to the project manager.Transactional leadership is required.

Management- If the senior manager is not cooperating with the project manager then the management can either convey its displeasure to senior manger or replace with other one.

c- Client- Leadership- The client is showing inability to provide finance on time so the leadership quality that muct be exerted should to take on board the client about further delay and situational leadership will be work best in this situation.

Management- The management should called the client and brief him about the delay in the project if finance will not be provided on time. They can take action against the client if such thing repeat in the future.

b- If I was in the management and the problem is from client side. I will ask the client to meet me in the office and provide him all the information about the financing structure. I will make him clear that if finance will not be available at required time it won't be possible to complete the project in time. I will reprimand the client about repetation of such thing in the future and convey it in strongest word.
