Path:- The portal vein can be devided into two parts , Intra-hepatic and Extra-hepatic part. Extra-hepatic part :- From its formation the trunk of portal vein passes upwards slightly to the right behind the neck of pancreas and first part of duodenum. It enters in front of epiploic foramen and reaches the porta hepatitis. where it devides into right and left branches. The right branch is vertical and shorter and joins with cystic vein. The left branch is longer and joins with para-imbilical vein. It is connected with ligamentum teres and ligamentum venosus. Intra-hepatic part:- Right and left branches of portal vein supplies the right and left lobes of liver. In short portal vein circulates in the liver through Portal vein> portal canal> hepatic sinusoids> central vein > sublobular vein > hepatic vein > inferior vena cava. Functions:- Hepatic portal system carry blood from pancreas, spleen , intestine, stomach, and drain into liver, it conveys the absorbed digested products to liver. It acts as a reservoir of blood. The external jugular vein drains mostly external cranium and the greater part of face. Internal jugualar vein drains the dura mater, brain, neck and face. The vein from which blood is usualy drawn is the median cubital vein. The great Saphenous vein is the longest vein in the body. The major veins that drain into common illiac vein are External illiac vein and Internal illiac vein. The subclavian veins are two , right and left, they are the continuation of the axillary vein and joins the internal jugular vein to form the Brachiocephalic veins. The venous drainage of cerebrum are of two types Superficial drainage and deep drainage. Superficial drainage is of dural venous sinuses they are located in the surface of the brain. The superficial saggital sinus, straight sinus and occipital sinus joins to form confluence of sinuses. From here two S- shaped sinus originate to form the two internal jugular vein. Deep drainage are composed of veins which join to form vein of Galea , this vein joins with inferior saggital sinus to form straight sinus and joins the conflurence of sinuses. Popliteal vein is found at the lower border of popliteal muscle and on the medial side of popliteal artery.
