Question
complete the fill in the blanks and provide which word is correct in the parantheses
Acid Base balance:
To keep the pH balance in the blood the body has three ways to buffer the pH using chemical, respiratory and renal mechanisms.
Fill in the following chemical equation which allows one to understand the chemical buffer system
CO2 + H2O ? H2CO3 ? H+ + ____________
When CO2 is high in blood this pushes this equation to the right to balance the extra CO2. This makes the blood (acid or basic) To compensate for this, the lungs can exhale more deeply as controlled by the brain stem. This lowers the amount of CO2 and hence it neutralizes the pH change. When one (hyper or hypoventilates) this also makes the blood more acidic. The kidney on the other hand can also try to achieve pH balance in this situation as well (under acidosis). To do this, instead of decreasing CO2 in the body as does the respiratory system, it increases H2CO3 to push the equation to the left.
The kidneys can also react and reestablish equilibrium by controlling both HCO3 levels. To do this, under acidosis conditions, the kidney would (create/reabsorb or Secrete) HCO3 while under alkalosis conditions the kidney would (create/reabsorb or Secrete) HCO3.
