Question

1. Visit your local grocery store (one with a larger produce section would be better). Look at the organic produce compared to the non- organic produce. Which section is larger? Select a fruit or vegetable from the organic section, find the same item in the non-organic section. How do the items compare in size, quality, and price? Note these things down and use them in your discussion. 2. After reading about organic produce in the text, what is one advantage of eating organic produce? What is one disadvantage?

Explanation / Answer

1. Usually, the non-organic produce would be larger. Growing fruits or vegetables or any crops in an organic manner would require longer duration compared to non-organic. However, due to the demand by the increasing population size, organic style of farming may not fulfill the demands. Hence non-organic are introduced by spraying chemical fertilizers (instead of natural manures used in organic farming) and artificial ripening agents to ripen the fruits (ethylene sprayed on fruits), etc.

The size of non-organic fruit would be larger. However, the quality of organic fruit is superior to non-organic (some non-organic may contain traces of pesticides). The price varies. But mostly, organic fruits are priced higher.

2. Advantage of eating organic produce- they are chemical free, pesticide free and natural. They are healthier compared to non-organic.

Disadvantage- they are priced higher and not available at all places.
