Subject: Applicant’s online profile and Social Media Background Checks

As our company has been experiencing for a long time now, misleading and inaccurate resumes are negatively affecting the talent pool we maintain. Asking applicants for an online electronic profile instead of traditional resumes and social media background check at the time of hiring, in my view will be good move to establish consistency in the applicant claims.

While social media background check has become more of a norm now, we as employers to keep in mind certain pointers to ensure we do not land into any legal troubles doing the same. Firstly, we need to ensure that the whole process is fair, and every applicant is cross-checked with the same intensity. Also, one very crucial point to keep in mind is that we can never ask an applicant for access to his/her account. Demanding passwords can violate laws on our part, and we would also be putting the applicant in violation of the service terms of major social media sites. Hence, any review or background check has to be limited to the applicant’s public information.

Also, it would be best if the social media background check is conducted in the later stages of the hiring process, ideally, post the offer have been made. It might sound counter-productive, but social media searches can instill unconscious bias in the interviewer, and issues related to discrimination might arise and put us in a difficult place.

Lastly, I feel if we use this process with caution, it can work in our favor. We need to make certain that we document everything, even the screenshots of the social media accounts reviewed.
