Question
Which parts changed the most (P-R, Q-T, QRS complex, T-P, Heart rate)? What is taking place within the heart during this process (P-R, Q-T, QRS complex, T-P, heart rate)? Incorporate discussion about atrial depolarization and ventricular depolarization as well as conduction system of the heart.
Activity P-R Q-T QRS COMPLEX T-P Heart rate Supine (laying down) 0.143 sec 0.344 sec 0.105 sec 0.259 sec 80.9 Sitting (looking at the ECG to try to lower HR) 0.223 sec 0.369 sec 0.140 sec 0.320 sec 72 After exercise 0.126 sec 0.330 sec 0.119 sec 0.065 120Explanation / Answer
The heart rate changed the most during exercise from the sitting position. The following will occur with cardiac cycle along with ECG :-
PR - atrial contraction or systole,
QT - ventricular contraction or systole,
QRS complex - ventricular contraction,
TP - ventricular diastole.
The parts of conduction system of heart include SA node, AV node, bundle of HIS and purkinje fibers. The impulse is generated in the SA node spontaneously and transmitted down the heart. SA node is called as the pacemaker of the heart. Impulse travels to the AV node, bundle of HIS and purkinje fibers. This impulse causes atrial depolarisation and ventricular depolarisation as it travels down the heart wall. Depolarisation and repolarization occurs in cyclic manner to cause the beating of heart.
