Question
You are to choose 2 different drugs that treat different diseases, disorders, or conditions. The drugs you choose also must be used to treat a condition, disorder, or disease that manily effects one of the body systems that we are studying this semester, so if you have any questions about that just email, text, or call me. In your paper, you need to discuss and detail many aspects of the drug such as what disease, disorder, or condition it treats and how does it do it and how does it work. What does the drug target? What system? What organ or organs? What possibly cell types, pathways, or receptors? What are some of the side effects of this treatment? Success of the drug or treatment? typed 3-4 pages double spaced
Explanation / Answer
1. Eplerenone: is used alone or in combination of with some other medicines to treat high blood pressure. It works by blocking a chemical aldosterone in our body which in turn lower the amount of sodium and water the body retains. Lowering high blood pressure helps in preventing stroke, heart attack and kidney problem. It is also used to treat congestive heart failure following a heart attack. There are some side effects of this treatment like headache, dizziness, diarrhoea or vomiting may occur, abnormal vaginal bleeding etc. Eplerenone, an aldosterone receptor antagonist similar to spironolactone has been shown to produce sustained increase in plasma rennin and serum aldosterone consistent with inhibition of the negative regulatory feedback of aldosterone on rennin secretion. It selectively binds to recombinant human mineralocorticoid receptors relative to its binding to glucocortocoid progestrone and androgen receptor.
2. Digoxin: is used to treat heart failure usually along with other medications. It is also used to treat certain types of irregular heartbeat such as chronic artrial fibrillation. Treating irregular heart beat helps in decreasing the risk of blood clots, reduce risk of heart attack and stroke. It belongs to class of medications called cardiac glycosides. It works by affecting certain minerals like potassium and sodium inside heart cells. This reduces strain on heart and helps it maintain a normal, steady and strong heartbeat. There are different types of side effects related to this treatment like dizziness, vomiting, nausea, headache, diarrhea, loss of appetite, weakness, mood change etc. It acts by inhibiting the cell membrane sodium potassium ATPase which leads to reversal of the usual sodium / calcium exchange.
