Organizations Cloud Computing Takes Off

1.What business benefits do cloud computing services provide? What problems do they solve?

2.What are the disadvantages of cloud computing?

3. What kinds of businesses are most likely to benefit from using cloud computing? Why?

Explanation / Answer

The Dark side of Big Data

1. Analyzing big data does not create ethical dilemma given that the insights that you gather are not used for malicious reasons. The reason is, most companies collect and analyze big data after taking the permission from the user (through their privacy policy and terms and condition). While it is true that majority of the people do not go through the details of these policies and conditions, the conscience of the company is usually clear. Hence there is no ethical dilemma.

2. The need for privacy policy for Big Data Analysis has not yet risen. The simple logic behind it is, organizations (big or small) are unable to harness big data potential to its full effect. The Big Data revolution is still at its infancy irrespective of how much people speak about it. Everybody claims that they are doing it but nobody actually knows how to use Big Data.

Monitoring Employees on Network

1. Manager should not monitor employee email and internet usage. The reason is, every individual has their right to privacy, whether it be workplace or home. Email and internet activities can be analogous to a person’s activity and documents at home. Monitoring them without their permission is a breach of privacy.

2. An effective email and web user policy could include monitoring the network usage and suspicious activities of email server. For example, instead of monitoring an individual, monitor the system usage of servers. This way in case of misuse, the servers could generate alerts and ask the administrator to intervene. Email and internet activity monitoring can then happen post acquiring permission from the employees.

3. If managers are monitoring employees then they must be informed about it. Firstly, monitoring someone without permission is breach of privacy. However, in case the manager is monitoring someone they should be informed about it to maintain transparency.

Organization cloud computing takes off

1. Cloud computing provides additional computing power to organizations at an affordable rate. The subscription of cloud computing means, that organizations can utilize computing resources without high capital expenditure. In addition, cloud systems are accessible globally. This helps in collaboration between teams across different geolocations. Cloud computing eventually (if utilized properly) reduces cost, improves time to market, removes data barriers, and increase the overall productivity.

2. The disadvantages of cloud computing is that they provide security risk. Since cloud computers are virtual hosts, they are often the easier target (with weak password) for cyber criminals.

3. Global businesses that operates across the different countries and locations will benefit from cloud computing. Businesses that are keen to keep capital expenditure low will benefit from cloud computing. Businesses where the data privacy is not of the highest priority will benefit. The reason is that cloud computing provides affordable solutions, convenience and easy scalable computing access to businesses.
