Question

Bryan had dinner at his favorite Italian restaurant. His menu consisted of a salad, a large plate of spaghetti, garlic bread, and wine. For dessert, he consumed “death by chocolate” cake and a cup of coffee. He topped off his evening with a cigarette and brandy. He returned home and, while lying on his couch watching television, he experienced a pain in his chest. He called 911 because he was certain he was having a heart attack. Bryan was told his heart was fine, but he needed to watch his diet. What happened to Bryan and why?

Explanation / Answer

Bryan had an episode of Angina or acute episode of Myocardial Infraction. As his usual diet consist of food in high calorie so over time there is deposition of atherosclerotic plaques in the coronary vessels. This lead to reduced blood flow to heart thus there is ischemia of myocardial tissue. Whenever there is increased demand of blood by heart or evem at rest thereay be sudden fall in blood supply to Myocardium due to reduced lumen or vasospasm of coronary vessel. This causes retrosternal or chest pain and is called Angina.
