Question

Use the five-step decision-making process (1. develop problem statement, 2. identify, evaluate and choose alternatives, 3. implement decision, 4. evaluate results and 5. ethical achievements) to analyze the following

You are currently being considered for a major promotion within your company to vice president of marketing. In your current position as manager of advertising, you supervise 15 managers and 10 hourly workers. As part of the annual salary review process, you have been given the flexibility to grant your employees an average 3 percent annual salary increase; however, you are strongly considering a lower amount. This would ensure that your department’s expenses stay under budget and would send the message that you are able to control costs. How would you proceed?

Explanation / Answer

The very first thing that I will be doing is understanding the problem related if the annual increase of 3% is provided, that will exhaust the budget of the department and in case of need the department will not be able to manage situations in the future if budget is required regarding anything. The alternatives need to be identified and in this case the alternatives are not much, in order to maintain the expenses in budget, then the salary increase should be lowered which may actually make the employees unhappy and they may feel deprived from their right of getting a good hike. The department will ensure that the budget is still left for future initiatives but if the employees are not satisfied then the productivity is ought to go down. The decision needs to be taken and the3% annual increase is granted keeping in mind employee satisfaction and consideration because employees are an important stakeholder in the business and their satisfaction is of utmost importance in order to make the business flourish. The results after the implementation of the decision needs to be analyzed and if there is anything that did not happen according to the plan, then the factors needs to be evaluated. I believe that ethical considerations are very much important while taking a decision and in this case, I believe that the most ethical decision was taken because if the increase percentage would have been lowered it would have benefitted me but not the employees and may also have affected the organization as a whole so ethics and values were considered in this context while taking the decision.
