Question

10. Respiratory epithelium is a very important feature of the respiratory system. Which sort of epithelial tissue is it composed of and what do the special features of this lining do? What is 11. What effect does cold air have on the cilia in the respiratory epithelium? the result of this? Pharynx 12. What is the pharynx? Tor EpiglottisA 13. What is the pharynx more commonly called (check the definition!)? Larynx Cricoid cartilage Esophagus Trachea 14. What is the pharyngeal tonsil, what is it also known as, and where is it located? 15. Although not fully understood, what purpose do tonsils (pharyngeal, palatine & lingual) seem to serve? Larynx 16. What is the larynx?

Explanation / Answer

10. From nasal cavity through the bronchi are lined by ciliated pseudostratified columnar epithelium with goblet cells and bronchioles are lined by simple cuboidal epithelium.

Special feature of this lining as follows:

The columnar ciliated cells contain cilia. Ciliary beating sweeps mucus and the dust in the bronchi and trachia towards the pharynx where it can be swallowed. The goblet cells secrete mucus which moisten the epithelial surface and adheres to inhaled particles, so dust and bacteria are prevented from reaching in to alveoli.

Cold air stimulate an increase in mucus production and mucus become thicker in cold temperature. This hinder the action of cilia to clear the inhaled particles including viruses and bacteria. This can lead to respiratory infection.
