Business Improvement and Performance Excellence Profile
Conduct a research activity on the following aspects of the key organizational characteristics of any ONE of the chosen Company or Organization that are serving the Global Consumer Market. Write a response paper to the following salient points and address the following prompts:
A. What are they trying to accomplish?
B. What changes can the management make that will result in improvement?
C. What are the indicators to know that a change is an improvement?
D. Define the process: its start, end, and what it does.
E. Describe the process: list the key tasks performed and sequence of steps, people involved, equipment used, environmental conditions, work methods, and materials used.
D. Describe the players: external and internal customers and suppliers, and process operators.
F. Define customer expectations: what the customer wants, when, and where, for both external and internal customers.
G. Determine what historical data are available on process performance, or what data need to be collected to better understand the process.
H. Describe the perceived problems associated with the process; for instance, failure to meet customer expectations, excessive variation, long cycle times, and so on.
I. Identify the primary causes of the problems and their impacts on process performance.
J. Develop potential changes or solutions to the process, and evaluate how these changes or solutions will address the primary causes.
Explanation / Answer
Global environment is a todays market place for any kind of business organization. So the strategic approach behind every company is a global strategy in definite.
A benificial global strategy is that kind of strategy where the organisation maximises profits with minimal investments.
So, a benificial practice of such strategy is
* organisation purchases material from a place where purchase cost is low
* later processes it where the processing cost is low
* finally sells the product where the prices are highest.
It applies to both manufacturing / trading / service industries.
Thus the business is Done in a large scale converging vast area , a specific design for quality check of respective end product/ service is must. And this purpose is solved by SIX SIGMA MODEL.
* this approach states that if you can quantify the defects found in a end product / service being provided to end user then the quality of the good / service equals approx zero defects level then profits automatically enhances and that results in maximising profits.
* here the organization is trying to improve its quality and provide excellence goods / services
* the six sigma approach has completely changed global environment business approach. Now we do everything for end user satisfaction.
Eg. Six sigma approach in soft ware industry.
A. They are trying to accomplish an improved version of software packages to be developed by that respective organisation.
B.
Changes which the management hasto make are
* observe the place of business required for its software development in sucha zone where its cost is low. ( eg : india , china , indonesia ) this results in cost minimisation
* past mistakes if any exists by organisation itself / mere competative companies are to be listed in order to be regulated.
D.
then the management starts a six sigma DMAIC approach. Which means
stepwise procedure namely
* define phase
* measure phase
* analyse phase
* improve phase and
* control phase
E.
define phase :
* the management firstly recognises initial existence of its goals and formulate a strategic plan in order to define the type of software hasto be developed.
* formulate definition , design and construction of software bypreparing project plan , estimating size of project , personal utilization and vendor management hasto be penned up may be on approx basis.
* deployment of resource on providing requited training facilities , documentation of observed aspects and infrastructure to be finally formulated is to be prepared.
* operative support hasto be taken from relevant data centre operations , help desks.
* eg : confirm project Y and gial isto improve out on time project performance from 62% to 90%
measure phase
* define performance goals and standards that are to be adopted in order to reach our final goal.
* lets say our initial target isto improve upto 50% which seems reasonable as a strech target of six sigma approach.
* firstly make short tasks. I.e chop you're large goal into smaller assigning it for every simple task may be tasks to be achieved in 80 working hours.
* now conduct the respective tasks and procedures and Notre down time devoted on each simple task and duration during which task has accomplished.
* measure the actual with our primarily formulated goals and if required improve procedures.
analyse phase
* once youre Done with that the measuring of current process capability , then formulate improved goals.
* data collection from requisite areas hasto be done in order to analyse if current procedures are adequate.
* observe the patterns of data collected which in return help us to analyse next step.
* for eg : if we frame Ann unrealistic schedule , bad things obviously happen. This lets us know realistic plan that Hasto be formulated.
* we add additional info of 20 other projects in order to make accurate targets reaching.
* now finally refine financial benifit forecast. I.e we might find average business benifit expected in the first year say it 8.5 million dollars now we know per month financial benifit and no.of months say 15 months.
So on average we require 134% of planned duration. Hence we are lagging 5 months.
improve phase
* find out defects being arising like lag of time etc
* provide strategic alternatives
* figure out solutions and finally follow / implement solutions.
control phase
* develop requisite control measures
* formulate control plan
* implement control procedures and review these procedures implementation and finally close the project.
