D.2)From the very beginning, the developing cells need oxygen and nutrients. The fetus recieves its nutrients from the mother through placenta and umbilical cord.

The placenta contains a collection of thin tissues known as blood barriers that permits some particles to flow between bloodstream of mother while restricting others. The placenta transfers oxygen and nutrients from mothers blood to placenta and wastes from placental blood to mother's blood.I t also produces hormones such as human chorionic gonadotropin hormones or hcg , estrogen, progesterone to signal baby's need to the mother.

As the food passes through digestive system of mother it break downs into small particles the body can absorb. These nutrients travel through mothers blood to the placenta. In addition to this ingested food, mothers body also break down muscle, fat and bones to provide proteins, fat and calcium to the fetus.
