Common causes are- post surgical(most common),blockage of the bronchiole or bronchus, which can be within the airways- mucus plug, foreign body, from the wall- tumors , specially squamous cell carcinoma(a type of bronchogenic carcinoma), or compressing from the outside- tumors etc.
