Explanation / Answer

The event highlighted here is a pulse polio immunisation program run by the government of India as a comprehensive country wide initiative to eradicate the menace of polio that cripples the children for life. The objective of the event is to include every child under 5 years of age in the program. The program was conducted in several stages spread across months to endure that no single child left out.

I was a witness to one such event that involved immunisation of a township of 25000, which had close to 5000 children below 5. The event was organised by "Vaatsalya" an NGO working in the field of childcare. I was deeply impressed by the way the head of the organisation went about the business. He was Dr. Mohan, a paediatrician himself who devoted one day s week to the social cause, treating children of the destitute free of cost. He had a team of 20 volunteers, all from different walks of society who took a day's break for this social cause. Mr. Mohan set up an impromptu counselling and treatment zone to guide the visitors about the importance of mission. He managed everything so meticulously, right from storage of medicine to the method of administration of drops to the counselling to the arrangement for water and refreshments for the team. The volunteers, many of them were lawyers, teachers, engineers and other professionals listened to his instructions carefully and followed. They respected him because of his knowledge level, mobilisation skills and down to earth attitude, and won tremendous respect from the Doctor for the selfless efforts for service. All in all, it was a group, difficult to find elsewhere, so dedicated and committed to a noble cause.

Later, I came to know that this group travels over the area every Sunday, spending out of their pockets to help people in need for causes related to healthcare, education and livelihood. The synergy thus created helps to address diverse social issues with ease, promptness and efficiency and yields great results.
