Question

During different types of activities, certain muscle groups are put under a great amount of stress. For the following activities, identify the most common muscles or groups of muscles that may be strained or torn as a result of this stress.

1. A sprinter begins a training session without a proper warm up. After a couple sprints, the athlete experiences a sudden sharp pain in his thigh. Identify the most likely locations(s) of the muscle strain.

2. During a shot on goal, a soccer player feels a ripping pain in her thigh. Identify the muscle(s) she may have injured.

Explanation / Answer

Answer:

1) Without proper warm up, a sprinter gets a sharp pain in the thigh due to injury/strain to the quadriceps femoris muscle group due to eccentric contractions, overstretching or functional overloading. The quadriceps contains four muscles namely the Rectus femoris(superficial), Vastus medialis, Vastus lateralis and Vastus intermedius. They form the hip flexors and brings about extension in the knee. The Rectus femoris crosses two joints along its course; the hip and the knee joints.

The location(s) or the sites where the strain occurs are in the muscle itself and at the distal musculotendinous junction of the rectus femoris just above the knee. They are also graded into three types based on the severity of the injury.

2) In soccer injuries, the ripping pain in the thigh following a shot is also due to a quadriceps muscle injury similar to the one explained earlier or due to a groin strain. In groin strain, the adductor longus muscle, one of the five hip adductor muscle group of the inner thigh where they connect to the tendons is torn on kicking a ball.
