Explanation / Answer
1) Embryonic period ends by 8th week. By the end of 8th week, embryo is full developed with most of its organs except sex organs. Embryogenesis is complete and embryo has developed into an organism which we call foetus.
2) Three important developmental milestones in Embryonic period are:-
a) Embryonic stage plays very important role in the development of the brain. In this stage neural tube forms, which later develops into Spinal cord and brain.
b) Cardio vascular system develops and heart will start to beat. Head begins to form followed by eyes, ears, nose and mouth.
c) Buds that will form arms and legs will appear. By the end of embryonic period, the embryo has all the basic organs except sex organs.
3) Placenta assumes it's responsibility by around 10 weeks. Important functions of placenta are:
a) Provides nutrition to baby
b) It acts like a kidney as it filters the blood to remove harmful substances.
c) It acts like a lung and delivers oxygen to your baby.
d) Placenta secretes many hormones like estrogen and progesterone to stop contraction of uterus before full term.
4) Chances of miscarriage is high in first trimester, however highest risk period is between 4 to 6 weeks.
5) Risk factors for miscarriage are:-
a) Age: Older women tend to have higher chance of miscarriage than younger one.
b) Weight: Overweight or Underweight
c) Previous history of miscarriage and chronic medical condition.
Data shows 30 to 50 % of fertilized eggs survive to delivery.
6) Doctors consider 22 weeks the earliest point in pregnancy when a baby is able to survive outside the womb with a great deal of medical attention.
7) Learning disabilities, Cognitive impairment, Hearing and vision impairment are some of the developmental deficit in preterm.
