Question
Problem 3: After taking a thermodynamics exam you enter a catatonic state on your couch and watch 24 hours of "Wheel of Fortune" reruns. Your only movements are those associated with shoveling spoonfuls of Ben and Jerry's ice cream into your mouth, at 30 calories each. a) Based on your calculations from problem 1, how many spoonfuls of ice cream must you consume just to power your heart while you vegetate? b) Given your results from part a), estimate what fraction of your total daily caloric intake goes toward powering your heart. Assess your own lifestyle in answering this question, both in terms of what you estimate your caloric intake to be, as well as what fraction of the day (if any) you spend under "stressed" cardiovascular conditions (e.g. working out). Use the index in your textbook to research a reasonable value for your intake if you don't know - it's in there. Hints and afterthoughts: Don't forget your right ventricle. -Don't assume your heart is 100% efficient. One food "calorie" is actually one kcal of energyExplanation / Answer
CATATONIC STATE: it is a state of psycho motor immobility and behavioral abnormality manifested by stupor. It means the person is not actively relating to the environment(stupor).
when the person is in catatonic state of stupor there is no physical or mental activity and in the above given case he is consuming ice cream ,if the person experiance an extreme loss of motor skill he can consume only that amount of ice cream given to him forcibly by someone else or if he is in constant hyperactive motor activity ,he will repeat consuming the ice cream even after it is finished as he does the movements unknowingly.
He should consume atleast 20 spoons of icecream to boost up his energy which gives him atleast 600 calories of energy to get back to his normal state. As he is at the end of the day schedule he needs less amount of energy.
In normal daily living a healthy adult man needs 2800 calories of food intake to maintain his body metabolism.Of which 40% carbohydrates,40% proteins,20% fat.Early morning breakfast taken in a healthy manner helps to boost up your heart to perform the days activity.Out of 2800 calories he needed 1300 calories should be taken in the breakfast,900 calories in the lunch and remaining 600 calories in the dinner( as he needs less energy to maintain his body basal metabolism i.e, normal bodily functions at rest). maximum amount of energy is utilised during the day to perform the physical activities and day to day functions, and more amount of energy is needed to workout which increases the cardiovascular activity.
If the heart is not 100% efficient ,he might get little exhausted in the middle of the workout where he needs extra calories to boost up his heart and get back to his workout.
