13. Epiphyseal plate can be defined as a layer of hyaline cartilage; it allows the bone to grow in length. This process occurs by a process called diaphysis. The epiphyseal plate is essentially known to comprise of 4 zones namely resting cartilage, proliferating cartilage, hypertrophic cartilage, calcified cartilage. When the epiphyseal plate tends to close, the cartilage in the epiphyseal plate is replaced by bone which is known as epiphyseal line. This process is trigerred by the stoppage of secretion of growth hormones by thyroid gland. The growing cartilage is essentially calcified by the addition of calcium and phosphorous ions, same happens with the other side of the epiphyseal plate which causes closure of the plate.
