esfapoptosis 23. Understand the changes that can occur in tissues by providing a definition for the following terms in boldface. This is a homework assignment. Definitions will be discussed in class after homework is graded. You are responsible for this info for the test. Your definition must be in the context of histology. It should focus on the changes taking place in tissues in general and not with respect to any specific tissue. It should not reference any specific organ either. Your definition should be in your own words as much as possible. Non text sources must be cited or no credit is given. Even if cited, your answer cannot bemorethan 20%.copy pasted or.copiedfromany.sourceincludingthe text. Make sure you understand the meaning all of the words in your definition, especially of your definition contains additional scientific/anatomic terms Use chapter 5 and/or the glossary of the text to find definitions of: a) Transformation of tissue: differentiation, anaplasia (not in text; source must be cited) and metaplasia b) Increase in mass: hypertrophy, hyperplasia, and neoplasia c) Decrease in mass: atrophy, senile atrophy, disuse atrophy, necrosis, infarction, and gangrene d) Replacement of tissue: regeneration and fibrosisExplanation / Answer
A. 1. Differentiation- the process by which cells, tissues and organs acquire different functions.
2. Anaplasia-loss of differentiation of cells and their orientation to each other.
3. Metaplasia-the tranformation of one type of cell to another type.
B.1. hypertrophy- it is increase in tissue mass by increase in size of cells.
Hyperplasia- it is increase in mass of tissue by increase in number of cells.
Neoplasia-formation of new or abnormal growth of tissue.
C. Atrophy- it is decrease in number of cells which leads to decrease in tissue mass.
Senile atrophy- decrease in tissue mass due to increasing age.
Disuse atrophy- drcrease in tissue mass due to not using the tissue or organ.
Necrosis-death of cells of an organ due to injury ,poor blood supply or oisease.
Infarction-obstruction of blood supply to an organ or part of it leading to its local death
Gangrene-it is localised death of tissue due to obtruction of its blood supply or infection.
D. Regeneration- it is regrowth of a body part or tissue after an injury.
Fibrosis-it is thickening or scarring of a tissue after an injury or infection eg tuberculosis.
