Question
It was Sunday afternoon and Joe C. Potato, was settling into his Barcalounger to watch the football game. He had his beer, cigarettes, and nachos within reach – life was good. Pittsburgh, his favorite team, scored a touchdown and he jumped up with a cheer, but immediately sat down as he felt a twinge of pain in his chest. “Darn angina acting up again” he said to his wife Nancy as he placed a nitroglycerine tablet under his tongue and finished his beer. Nancy sighed. “Joe, you really need to cut back on the smoking and drinking. You know the doctor said that if you don’t change your lifestyle you are going to end up having a heart attack”. “Nonsense” said Joe, “as long as I take my aspirin every day I’ll be fine.”

Explanation / Answer
1) angina is a clinal sundroke of chest discomfort resulting from transient myocardial ischemia. (I'm balance between oxygen demand and supply to heart)
The most common cause is coronary atherosclerosis.
2) atherosclerosis is a condition in which there occurs collection of abnormal fat, cells and debris in the coronary vessels leading to decrease in the cross section of the coronary Arteries.
3) hypercholesterolemia and low HDL levels are once factor. There are many others for eg. Old age, males are more prone, smoking, alcohol, hypertension, stress, obesity etc.
4) nitroglycerin causes vasodilatation. Due to vasodilatation blood flow increases to the heart and so does the oxygen supply. Hence people with angina take nitroglycerine.
5) it is an antiplatelet agent. Hence if there is a clot it breaks it. Hence it is beneficial for patients with atherosclerosis
