Primary visual cortex has become a model system for neuronal processing by the circuitry of the cerebral cortex. Ultimately, we would like to understand how the higher cortical areas give rise to our recognition of sensory stimuli, decision making, and language comprehension. But, we barely have a way of defining what tasks are performed in these areas, let alone how they are performed.
