Question
After the central line was placed, it pinched off and failed to work when the patient held a heavy weight in her hand and the inferior movement of her clavicle compressed the central line within the subclavian vein. The physician decided to remove the central line from the basilica vein and place another central line into the internal jugular vein. The IJV provides a more direct route to the heart and avoids the problem of catheter pinch off. List the veins in order through which the central line passes as it travels from the internal jugular vein to the right atrium of the heart.
Explanation / Answer
Central linee is also known as central venous cathether(CVC). when catheter is plaved in chest it is known as subclavien vein or axillary vein. It is inserted through skin in to large vein near heart. It provide medicine, blood into the vein thus shows its effect quickly. But some time central line pinched off and fails to work. Generally such thing happened when catheter is compressed between first reib and clavicle and in such case catheter need to be replaced and placed through internal jugular vein to avoid further complication.
Internal jugular allow the straight route from vein to right side of the heart. IJV follows route passes through inferior aspect of the external acoustic meatus to medial aspect of clavicle. From sternocliedomastoid muscles it joins sunclavian vein and from the posterior side of the clavicle closet to sternum it forms brachiocephalic vein.
