(skipping the Krebs cycle)
A.
the ATP – PC pathway
B.
anaerobic glycolysis
C.
anaerobic glycolysis combined with the electron transport system
(skipping the Krebs cycle)
D.
beta oxidation combined with the electron transport system
(skipping the Krebs cycle)
Explanation / Answer
The ATP - pc pathway is also known ads phosphogen system. In this the phosphocreatin molecule provides the necessary ATP for very short duration. This system producing ATP and providing energy can be observed in athletes. Anaerobic glycolysis produces only 2 ATP. Glycolysis produces 2 ATP in presence or absence of oxygen. Anaerobic glycolysis with electron transport system and without Krebs cycle does not produce more ATP because the reducing power NADH/FADH2 are not available for electron transport. Betaoxidation with electron transport and without Krebs cycle can prtoduce ATP. For example, malate shuttle accomplishes the fatty acids entering mitochondrial inner membrane and fatty acyl Co A is produced and converted to acetyl CoA and then Krebs cycle and electron transport produce ATP through oxidative phosphorylation. Option D is correct.
