Question

Given the following table

Using the data above as the initial conditions in each case, determine the effects of the following procedures on the water and solute in the ECF and ICF after equilibrium has occurred. You should be able to give the numerical values for volume and osmolarity of the ECF and ICF. Briefly explain your rationale for solving each problem. (Treat each solution below as a separate problem; do not make them additive.)

Patient ingests 1 L of water containing 0.3 moles of urea, all of which is absorbed.

How will the values in this table change? and why?

Work in two steps

Total ECF ICF Plasma Vol L 40 L 13 L 27 L 2.8 L Sol osmol 11.4 3.705 7.695 0.798 mOsM 285 285 285 285

Explanation / Answer

when 1L of water containing 0.3 moles of urea is ingested,

it will get added to both the ECF and total values.

The osmolarity will change accordingly.

after some time, to maintain equal osmolarity of ECF and ICF, by the process of osmosis, water will come out of the cells to ECF, so that, the osmolarity of both ECF and ICF is the same.

(since, urea cannot enter cells to maintain osmolarity)

Hence, average osmolarity becomes 285.535,

and hence 0.05L of water needs to be released from ICF to ECF while total volume remains same.

Quantity Total ECF ICF Vol L 41 14 27 Sol osmol 11.7 4.005 7.695 mOsM 285.365 286.07 285
