5. (15 pts) Protein hormone “A” and protein hormone “B” produce the same response (“R”) in cells of tissue “C”.  

A. Describe an experiment that would determine whether A and B act on the same or on different receptors, and illustrate this with two graphs. On each of the graphs, show the results if A and B act on the same receptors and if they act on different receptors.

B. Now imagine that you have determined that A and B act on separate receptors and you perform an experiment which shows that the effects of A and B are additive. That is, in the presence of a dose of A that produces a maximal response, the addition of B will increase the response further. Discuss the kinds of signal transduction events that could account for this.

Synergism when action of one drug is facilitated or increased by other they are said to be synergistic . The synergistic pair of drug can have action in same direction or given alone one may be inactive but still enhance the action of other when given together. . They are additive when effect of combined drugs A and B simply add up in same direction.
