Question
1. From most posterior to anterior, put the foramen in order.
Jugular Foramen, Foramen Magnum, Superior Orbital Fissure, Carotid Canal
2. List one criteria used for naming muscles.
Temporalis
Masseter
Digastricus
Sternocleidomastoid
Medial & Lateral Pterygoid
Trapezius
Latissimus Dorsi
Pectoralis Major
3. The developing fetal skull has several "soft spots" that ossify over the first two years of life. What are the two largest "soft spots" in the newborn skull? What are the two main purposes of these soft spots?
4. How are the atlas and axis vertebrae morphologically different from "typical" vertebrae? Be sure to mention two features for each.
Temporalis
Masseter
Digastricus
Sternocleidomastoid
Medial & Lateral Pterygoid
Trapezius
Latissimus Dorsi
Pectoralis Major
Explanation / Answer
The arrangment of Foramen from posterior to anterior is as follows
Foramen magnum (found in the base of skull from which spinal cord passes), followed by
Jugular foramen (is large foramen at the base of skul)
Carotid canal (is the canal through which internal carotic artery pases).
Superior orbital fissure.(which is positoned with sphenoid bone)
2. Temporalis: Is named after the temporal bone, which is located in the temple region.
Masseter: In humans it is the muscle for mastication, hence the name.
Digastricus : Its name is derived from greek for two bellies, because the muscle divides into two sections.
Strenocleidomastoid : It is named so because it originates at the sternum (sterno-) and the clavicle(cieido-).
Medial and lateral pterygoid : It is named so because of its origin, this muscle originates from pterygoid fossa and pterygoid process of sphenoid.
Trapezius: It is named so because of its trapezoidal shape.
Latissimus dorsi : Is one of the widest muscles of human body, the name Latissmus dorsi means broadest muscle of the back.
Pectoris major : Is the muscle situated at the chest, in latin pectoris means breast.
3.The soft spots in the newborn skull are the Posterior Fontanelle, which is situated on the back of baby's head and the Anterior Fontanelle situated on top of head.
A soft spot on the baby's skull enables the easy passage of the baby during labour.Baby's fontanelle can give important clues regarding the health of the baby, bulging fontanelle can be a symptom of Meningitis
4.The atlas and axis has no body, because the body of atlas has been fused with that of axis.It is ring like structure and consists of anterior and posterior arch
