Question

Example I: Consider a solution that is both 0.5 M glucose and 0.5 M of an amino acid. Therefore, 1 L of this solution contains 0.5 moles of glucose AND 0.5 moles of amino acid. This is a total of 1 mole of stuff' per 1 Liter of water. Thus, the osmolarity of the solution is 1 OsM Example 2: A NaCl solution will have l mole of NaCl per l Liter of water. However, since NaCl is a salt, it dissolves in water into its respective ions: Na and Cl Thus, each salt "particle" actually dissolves into two particles in water. The true osmolarity, then, is double the molarity. This solution is 2 OsM. Rule of Thumb: Since water dissociates most ions, salts always have a higher osmolarity than molarity For example, CaCly dissolves into Ca and 2 Ct ions. Thus, the osmolarity is 3x the molarity for this sali. 3) A solution has 10 mM of glucose and 25 mM of albumin protein. What is the osmolarity of this solution? 35mM 4) A solution contains 50 mM NaCI, 20 mM glucose, and 10 mM albumin. What is the osmolarity of this solution? It is straightforward to compare osmolarity between a cell and a solution. A solution with a higher osmolarity is hyperosmotic to the cell. A solution with the same osmolarity compared to a cell is isosmotic. A solution with a lower osmolarity is hyposomotic.

Explanation / Answer

3.as the solution has 15mM (15*10-3M  ) and 25mM (25*10-3 M) of amino acids

so total molarity of solution will be (15+25)mM=35mM or 35*10-3M

4.this 1litre solution has

so net osmolarity of sloution =( 20+10+50+50)mM =130mM or 0.13M

5.a)after disolution of NaCl ,cell have 15mM Na+ and 15mM Cl-

so total osmolarity of cell =(15+15)mM =30mM

b)solution has

15mM glucose and 15mM dextrose so, net osmolarity will be=

(15+15)mM =30mM

c) As the osmolarity of both the cell and solution are equal solution is Isotonic to cell.

7.  NaCl, cannot cross the cell membrane . So non penetrating solute to human RBC

8.Simple sugars such as glucose can diffuse through lipid bilayer of plasma membrane so, penetrating solute.
