Explanation / Answer
Ans 1)
Osteoporosis – It is a condition that leads to gradual weakening of the bones which might lead to breaking of bones or fracture. It increases the risk of fractures especially impacting the bones of hip, wrist, spinal vertebrae etc. In this the bone density decreases due to the reduction of bone production by body. It leads to weakening of the spine causing bending and stooping. The body stops renewing the bone tissues and hence it is not able to replace the old, damaged bones. It creates porous appearance gradually weakening the bone.
Osteopenia – It is condition of severe bone loss and when the bone becomes thinner. They are weaker than normal but not so weak that they break easily. It generally occurs after age of 50 and it does increase the chances of osteoporosis. The major difference from osteoporosis is in osteopenia is thinning of bone mass but not severe enough to cause bone break or fracture.
Osteomalacia – It is a condition of softening of the bones which is majorly caused due to deficiency of Vitamin D. It is majorly caused due to impaired bone metabolism due to deficiency of calcium, phosphate and vitamin D. It is caused due to lack of bone mineralization. This weakens the bone and causes them to bend and break.
Rickets – It is a disorder or a childhood disorder of bone where the bones soften and leads to deformity while growing up. The major cause of rickets is lack of Vitamin D due to which enough mineralization of the bone is not done. Due to the weakness in the bones they become deformed and one of the main causes is malnutrition. Low exposure to sunlight, low Vitamin D intakes etc. are the main cause. The major difference between ricket and osteomalacia is the former is something that is caused in children and the later in adults. It is more or less the same.
