Scientists discovered a new species of freshwater fish that lives in a pond with a very low O2 level. When they measured the oxygen extraction efficiency of the fish, it was twice as high as that of closely-related fresh water fish. Answer the following questions.

1. Explain how the fish could achieve a high O2 extraction efficiency.

2. From your explaination, list predicitions that derive from your hypothesis.

3. Come up with an experiment to test your prediction. What types of measurements would be made? What is the control group?

Ans 1) The fish is able to achieve a high oxygen extraction efficiency even when there is low oxygen tension as it has highly specialized gills. The gills in the fish are very strong and specialized which helps them to absorb oxygen from the surrounding water into their blood. The fish is able to use the countercurrent oxygen exchange which is able to maximize the amount of oxygen that the blood is able to pick up. In this the fish has high oxygen efficient as the blood flows through the gills in the opposite direction as the water. This helps the blood to gain oxygen from the water and hence it is able to send in high oxygen concentration which is able to send in more oxygen.

Ans 2) Predictions that derive from the hypothesis:-

Ans 3) lets us take an experiment where we take takes fishes that are able to survive in low oxygen concentration and fishes which are not able to survive. In this the control will be the fish which is able to measure a high oxygen efficiency despite the low oxygen tension. The measurements that would be made is the amount of oxygen the fish is able to take up along with concentration of oxygen the gills are able to take.
