Question
What types of research projects can you think about the field of Cognitive Science (Cognitive Psychology and Machine Learning/AI)?
For example, an example of a very famous research project is Dr. Rosalind Picard's Affective computing and autism project. Can you think of 5 research projects that are Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning research projects? Please include the name of the professor and the name of the university where the research project is being conducted.
Cognitive Science:
Studying in a scientific way about human thoughts, learning, and mental organization.
This is the type of example I am looking for: Automated ‘coach’ could help with social interactions
New software system from MIT could help people improve their conversational and interview skills.
Teaching Social Skills: Using his expertise in computer science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence, Ehsan Hoque, assistant professor of computer science, has since created an automated conversation assistant that senses body language and emotion. http://news.mit.edu/2013/automated-coach-could-help-with-social-interactions-0614
The biggest problem with this example is that sometimes there is very little info on these projects. For an expert, it should be relatively easy to know which projects are highly talked about by the press, by scientists, and by researchers.
Explanation / Answer
Cognitive science is called study of mental organisation, thought and its learning process. In this branch we use all the aspects which keep the mind engaging , i.e., linguistics, psychology, philosophy and even computer modelling. To understand our mind and for its betterment researchers continuously are engaged in projects which helps us understand each and every aspect.
The idea of computer modelling or computation developed in 19th century, when it was realised that computation is the best way to model minds. This was the time when the base for AI was kept. However it came on the ground in 20th century. But now it has become the core area of cognitive science.
AI is not different from any other sciences like chemistry, physics etc.Like these sciences it also need to focus upon the processes which, in case of AI, are cognitive processes. Research projects should be based upon these cognitive processes. some examples may be learning process of a child, language learning, adaptation to new environ ment, tackling with disabilities, memory maintainance etc.
Now a days there is a lot going on to explore these areas:---
So, it can be concluded that research projects in the field of cognitive science are mainly oriented to AI and has become the core area. Now researchers mainly working to enhance human performance and to get the answers of many unanswered questions about cognitive processes shown by human kind under different circumstances.
