Algorithms decide who gets a loan, who gets a job interview, who gets insurance and much more -- but they don't automatically make things fair. Mathematician and data scientist Cathy O'Neil coined a term for algorithms that are secret, important and harmful: "weapons of math destruction." Learn more about the hidden agendas behind the formulas. Are we more than algorithms? Why/Why not?

Explanation / Answer

Algorithms are the rules based on the past where certain action are identified that have led to success and used to form algorithms. These are considered fair because it involves sime maths. But Cathe o Neil have pointed towards how these algorithm are destructive apart from destructive. They are thhe opinions embedded in algorithms, math based rules. They does not work objectively always. For example , to select an employee , if past records of successful employee is used to formulate a recruitment test for future , then there will be biased that will be incorporated into algorithm. For example , in past women were not much successful so algorithms will be biased against women . But no one will think about it and consider the algorithms as objective and fair , showing blind faith.

Neil has argued that one should end blind faith on big data and algorithms because they are designed to serve a private interest rather than serving the true interest. For example , in political campaign , it is shown who is leading the campaign by what margin but never data is used to show policy effectiveness and voting based onto that .this highlights the problems of big data and urgent need to scrutinize, question and tweaking of data and rules to match the need rather just blindly believing on maths.
