Half of a group of adults were told that doing well on a pre-college skills assessment test would be a determining factor in whether they would be able to enroll in college. The other half was told that the test was for research purposes and that their names would not even be recorded. The entire group was about equal in intelligence. Both groups then took the text and the average scores for each group were compared. The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of anxiety upon test taking.
