Question

From your perspective, how does the material in your textbook on the topics of self-presentation and social perception relate to the passage from Matthew 7:3-5, in which Jesus asks: "Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brothers' eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eyes when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye."

Explanation / Answer

Social Presentation is how people project themselves to others in order to gain their attention and approval. Social perception is how people form opinions about how to carry things. People view others as role models to form their own presentation. If we view the words of Jesus here, most of the people are not themselves as they keep behaving, projecting and creating impressions, so, they are not real. Jesus wanted people to be on their own and look into themselves before blaming others. So, one should make oneself perfect and receive comments to make oneself perfect before pointing out the mistakes of others. In today’s scenario, it becomes very difficult to judge one with their external appearance.
