Question

The topic can be an ethical issue you faced in your clinical experiences or current practice. Some examples in the past include minor's rights to refuse care and the role of the RN; whistle blowing and the role of the RN; end of life decision making and the role of the RN; parental refusal of their child's treatment; parental refusal of vaccinations and family presence during CPR to name a few.

Students may take a topic from their clinical practice or even something they have read about in their clinical practice. Be sure and remember to look at the issue from the RN role and consider application of the (4) ethical principles that apply. You do not solve the problem. Follow the rubric !

Once you have identified your topic:

Identify and research the ethical issue confronting nurses in practice.

This requires a description of the problem (30%) including:

o       identification of the issue or description of the problem

o       identification of the ethical dilemma including (4) ethical principles that apply

o       how the issue impacts stakeholders involved.

Explanation / Answer

The problem is the fear of needles in the child, who has cancer and needs to go under operation with anasathesia, the parents give heed to the fear and take the same decision as the child.

The ethical norm of autonomy play into picture here. The Registered nurse, despite being hired for care cannot take the decision against the patient and his parents. But the play of beneficence, which says that all actions have to be in benefit of the patient comes into play as well.

The issue can impact the child and the parents as the operation could potentially save the child's life.
