Question

Based on the article: Positive and negative interaction molds the architecture of infants' brains at a much earlier age than most parents assume By Katharine Stevens, answer the following questions 1. In this article, what developmental theory (or theories) seem to underlie the author's perspective orn development? What makes you think this? 2. Which seems to be more emphasized as affecting development 'nature" or "nurture" (or a combination of them both)? 3. Is development represented as quantitative, qualitative, or both? 4. Is development represented as continuous or discontinuous? s. Do you agree with the author's perspective on the issue? Why or why not?

Explanation / Answer

1. Author's concept is on how the baby's brain is developed?

Development theories underlying are:

a. Long term quality care contributes in the development of the brain of a child.

b. Reading something loudly , helps the child in developing language skills .

c. Children can sense , and are affected by the mood of their parents . This usually takes place after 6 months of age .

d. The development of a child are affected , when they witness acts like violence .

2. Nature is something , by which a child is inherently born with . It is the genetic make up and the functioning of the brain where no one has control over it . Eg : The eyes of the child are green in colour. Hence , it is something which cannot be changed and that is the trait with which the child is born.

Whereas Nurture is a way of upbringing your child. It is the way , in which the parents train their child/children. (i.e. cultural traits). When they start interacting and socialise with friends , that is when it affects their nurturing . (Eg : bad company of friends affects the nurtuing of a person)

3. It can be both . Quantitative in terms of growth in weight , height , etc

Qualitatively speaking , are the :

a. Changes in their way of thinking. (i.e . their thought process)

b . Way of behaving

c. The process of perceiving

4 . Development is a continuous process.

The growth of a child , keeps on growing . Growing itself is a continuos process . It is a gradual process and takes some period of time .

Whereas , discontinuos development is a kind of development which occurs at different stages of life .

The one which is discussed over here , ( infant's development) is a continuous one .

5. Yes , I agree with the author .

The reasons which are stated above , for the development of of a child are 100 percent true.

One of them I would like to speak about is , the effect of violence a child goes through during the development period. When they see more of this , they somewhere become violent and aggressive in nature. Later on in their life , this behaviour turns into abusive in nature. This can worsen in the development of a child.
