Question
2) Crystal Maiden It's winter time for Rylai! Although she lives in South Carolina, an unusually cold winter has caused a snowfall in January. Rylai goes outside and immediately regrets her decision. The extremely low temperature causes Rylai to shiver in.an attewpt.to warm her body up. As this is happening, Rylai also sees her first snowfall as small crystal flakes drop from the sky. As the harsh winter continues, Rylai notices something else as the weeks progress- sometimes when she wakes up in the moning and sees snow outside her window, she shivers even though its 75° in her room! 1. What is the unconditioned stimulus? 2. What is the unconditioned response? 3. What is the neutral stimulus that becomes the conditioned stimulus? 4. What is the conditioned response?Explanation / Answer
1) Unconditioned Stimulus –In classical conditioning process the Unconditional stimulus refers to the stimulus that can create an unconditional, natural response. An unconditioned stimulus always naturally produces a response.
As example- Here Rylai shivers for extreme lower temperature so the lower temperature is here the unconditioned stimulus.
2) Unconditioned Response- In the learning process of classical conditioning, Unconditioned response refers to the unlearned response which occurs automatically and naturally as the reaction of Unconditioned response.
As example- Here Rylai shivers for the lower temperature. So here Rylai’s Shivering is the Unconditioned Response which is natural and an unlearned reaction.
3) Neutral Stimulus that becomes the Unconditioned stimulus
Neutral Stimulus is the stimulus that basically does not produce any specific response. But when a neutral stimulus is presented with the Unconditioned stimulus it becomes a Conditioned Stimulus.
As example- Here Snow is the Conditioned stimulus. Because, Snow was the neutral stimulus but it’s become Conditioned stimulus with the presence of Unconditioned stimulus which is the low temperature.
4) Conditioned Response-
When a neutral response paired up with the Unconditioned stimulus it produces a learned response. This response is called the Conditioned Response. A conditioned response is similar with the Unconditioned response but Conditioned response only happens in the presence of Conditioned stimulus.
As example- Here Rylai’s shivering even through in a hot temperature is the Conditioned Response. The snow here conditioned stimulus which produces the Conditioned response Rylai’s shivering.
