Question

due Oct 3 at 7pm This is a graded discussion: 5 points possible Social Perception Imagine the following situation: you are driving along a local highway when your car has a flat tire. It is ten miles to the next exit, so you pull to the side of the road. You have a broken wrist, so you cannot change the tire yourself. As you stand there waiting for help, you see a good friend drive by without stopping - leaving you stranded. As you continue to stand there, you now fume about why your friend didn't stop and help you. What are the possibilities? What would you want to know before deciding that your friend isn't your friend after all before you make a correspondent inference)? Has something like this ever happened? What inference did you make? Now that you know about attributions, what do you think of the attributions you made? Unread Subscribe Search entries or author Reply

Explanation / Answer

If I were put in a situation where my friend drove past me without attempting to help me, I would be furious and very upset. I would question his genuineness as a friend and our friendship altogether. I would maybe even hurl a couple of cursed at him. However, since I have now learned about attributions in greater depth, I realize that although my first reaction would be to blame him for his act, I should consider the impact of external forces as well. From this perspective, I would reason that perhaps my friend was unable to see me or was simply too focused on her driving.
