Question

As the (hypothetical or real) parent of a three year-old it is time to decide how your child will spend these formative years (3-5). Should they remain at home with you, a relative, or a nanny? Or, should they be in a more structured situation, e.g. daycare or preschool? If so, what characteristics would you look for before placing your child in such a situation? Draw on theory, statistics or research to support this decision. Include a value statement outlining your expectations of desired outcomes from this early childhood experience.

Explanation / Answer

My child is 5 year old. I was very particular that whe he would be three I would out him to nursery school. The activties conducted in school help children in socializing, getting more friends, being adjustive, their motor or cognitive skills also increase compared to being at home or with nanny. Parents can teach language, they can bring home toys. But playing with other children is more of learning.

Even Jean Piaget's theory supports this fact, it is referred as pre-operational stage for the age of 2-7. Their thoughts, feelings are also developed when they listen to any story with other children. They slowly start understanding perspective of teacher or other chidlren. Piaget's theories are used in many schools. My child learnt to make manipulative toys with lego as he also observed other chidlren around. In nursery or kindergarten the focus is on process pff learning rather than end product as Piaget mentions.

Value statement - The parents can find core interest of their child in this stage such as sports, music, counting, words etc.
