Lab Exercise 1: Consider aspects of poor human factors designs available at baddesigns.com a. b. Next, find an example within the transportation system that does not meet intelligent human factors design criteria. In other words, look for a poorly designed object. Preferable examples include real world examples with which you have encountered or are familiar however, web-based examples may be used if necessary. Once you find the object, answer the following questions: 1) What are the well-designed aspects of the object? 2) What are the poorly designed aspects of the object? 3) How would you improve the design of the object? c.

Explanation / Answer

a. baddesigns.com is a website where people post about the bad designs based on poor human factors, and provides the possible solutions that could have been avoided to avoid the problem.

An important aspect behind poor human factors designs is the negligence in the efficieny of usefulness of the item. Although a given product might be well developed, attention must be paid as to how comfortable the end user will be, using the product.

b. An example from the website baddesigns.com is that of the refrigerator at:

http://www.baddesigns.com/fridge.html

Here, the refrigerator has handle knobs on both left and right.Obviously, any person using it would think that it opens from both ends. But on trying to open it, it turns out that it can be opened just from one end. It makes no sense of giving a knob at the other end as well.

c. The well designed aspects of the project are that the fridge is in a working condition. There are no complaints about its functioning in the article. Poorly designed aspect is the handle knob provided at an end from which the fridge cannot be opened. To correct this, it must be re-designed to provide the knob from only the side from which the door opens.
